Lees was born in London on 24 July 1834〔“Who was Who” 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 071363457X〕 and educated at London University. He was the incumbent at Carnach,〔Official Appointments, The Morning Post (London, England), 29 September 1856; p. 4; Issue 25816〕Abbey of Paisley 〔Ecclesiastical, Hampshire Advertiser & Salisbury Guardian (Southampton, England), 26 November 1859; p. 3; Issue 1891. 19th Century British Library Newspapers: Part II.〕 and St Giles' Cathedral Edinburgh.〔( Memorial on Flickr )〕 He was Dean of the Thistle and Dean of the Chapel Royal from 1887 to 1910.〔The Times, 12 March 1886; pg. 11; Issue 31706; col F, ''Court Circular''〕 He was an Honorary Chaplain to the Queen from 1881 to 1901, and was appointed a Chaplain-in-Ordinary in Scotland to King Edward VII in October 1901.
